Chester-le-Street Amazons FC was established in 2005. It seems unimaginable now, but the number of girls football teams out there was in the single figures. There were a very small number of leagues and the youngest league available was at under 10s age group. There was simply no girls football available to any girls younger than 9 years old.
As a result of watching her two boys playing football and getting so much fun and enjoyment out of it, our Chairperson, Julie Scurfield, felt the injustice of it all and decided to take matters into her own hands. Having never kicked a football in her life she enrolled for her FA Level 1 Coaching Badge … she still to this day does not really quite know how she passed the course, even wearing football boots was a whole new experience for her, but she did.
Next step, gather some willing girls…. She sent a letter into St. Cuthberts RC Primary School in Chester-le-Street inviting girls who were interested to come and meet her on the school field one warm spring evening. 9 wonderful girls turned up, full of confidence in this “expert” stood before them!!!
After a couple of training sessions, and the purchase of football kits and a few balls, off we went full of confidence to our first match. We lost 20-0 and in most games for the next few seasons, this was not an unusual score-line. In fact, our celebrations came if we kept the score into single figures. It took us 3 seasons to score our first goal and 4 to win our first match. What was simply incredible throughout this whole period was the spirit and determination of those original Amazons who just simply WOULD NOT give up – such was the love and passion they had for the game and the experience of being part of this incredible team. The whole experience of those early years, for those of us that lived and breathed it, has become so much a part of our lives and our development and is now firmly etched into the fabric of this amazing Club!!
On the back of the resilience of the original Amazons our now thriving successful club has been formed. It has taken us many years of hard work and commitment from so very many people, but we are proud of where we stand now being one of the largest Girls and Women’s Football Clubs in the region.
